Shaken LA: 4.6 Quake Rocks Movie Capital

  • Preliminary reports indicate 4.6 magnitude earthquake centered southwest of Westlake Village
  • No immediate reports of damage or injuries, but landslides a potential concern
  • Earthquake occurred in an area known for seismic activity
  • Local authorities conducting assessments to ensure infrastructure safety

A good-sized earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter Scale struck Los Angeles today, causing windows to rattle and residents to feel a strong jolt. While there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries, concerns about potential landslides have been raised due to the heavy rainfall the area received in the past week. This earthquake is considered the largest shake felt in the region for quite some time.

The Earthquake and Seismic Activity

Location and Magnitude

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at approximately 1:47 p.m. and was centered about 7.7 miles southwest of Westlake Village. The depth of the earthquake was estimated to be around eight miles. Dr. Lucy Jones of the USGS mentioned that the shock happened near the Malibu Coast Fault, an area known for its seismic activity. Another USGS official suggested that the quake may have occurred on the nearby Anacapa-Dume Fault.

Historical Seismic Activity

The Malibu Coast Fault line, which runs along the coast and dips beneath the mountains, has experienced several earthquakes in the past. There have been five recorded events of magnitude 4 or greater in the local area, including a 5.3 magnitude quake in 1973, a 5.2 magnitude quake in 1979, and another in 1989. The most recent significant earthquake was a 4.4 magnitude shake in 2009.

Assessing Damage and Ensuring Safety

Immediately following the earthquake, local authorities, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu officials, reported no injuries or property damage. The Los Angeles City Fire Department activated their “earthquake mode,” where crews survey the entire city to assess any potential damage. Initial indications suggest no reports of significant damage.

The LAFD’s procedure after an earthquake includes inspecting transportation infrastructures such as freeway overpasses, large places of assemblage, apartment buildings, dams, and power lines. This thorough survey typically takes about an hour to complete. It is worth noting that in the past, larger earthquakes, such as the 1994 Northridge quake, compromised overpasses and bridges.

Widespread Impact and Eyewitness Accounts

The earthquake was felt beyond the immediate epicenter, with reports of shaking reaching as far south as San Diego, as far north as Goleta, and as far east as Banning. Eyewitnesses shared their experiences, including Joy Taylor, an anchor on Fox Sports 1, whose live broadcast was momentarily disrupted by the shaking. Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho, who was on air with Taylor, captured the incident in a video, describing the confusion and intensity of the moment.

Aftershocks and Future Concerns

The USGS has detected aftershocks with magnitudes as high as 3.0 following the initial earthquake. Experts caution that there is a 5% chance this earthquake could be a foreshock preceding a larger event within the next 24 hours. However, it is important to note that the earthquake in Los Angeles is not connected to the earlier earthquake in Hawaii.

No Tsunami Threat

The National Weather Service has confirmed that there is no danger of a tsunami for the Malibu area. They issued a statement to reassure residents that no tsunami threat exists.

While a 4.6 magnitude earthquake shook Los Angeles, causing windows to rattle and residents to feel a strong jolt, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Local authorities are diligently assessing the situation to ensure public safety. The earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s seismic activity and the importance of preparedness. As aftershocks continue and the possibility of future earthquakes remains, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
